How to choose a multi-tool and what to look out for before buying it?

An exercise machine can be the solution when we don’t have the time or luxury to visit the gym often. With a quality home gym equipment, we can exercise satisfactorily in the comfort of our home, taking advantage of the minimal time we have at our disposal.

But how do I choose a multi-tool for exercises?

Three main things we need to calculate correctly:

  1. the available budget
  2. the available space
  3. our fitness level and the ability of the equipment
(plenty of exercises, set of integrated kilos) to harmonize with her and our future goals.

Of course, all of the above interact and we are called upon to make the necessary compromises and make the best possible choice.

For example, we would all like a multi-gym with the greatest possible variety of exercises, “loaded” with many kilos and scrolling flow worthy of the professional gym equipment! However, this does not usually go hand in hand with a low purchase budget or with a small available space.

So we first decide which are the exercises that we “can’t do” without them, we calculate how many kilos we can lift now or in the future and based on that we make our choice after first ruling out any models that do not fit into our budget and the space of our home.

There are also some other parameters to take into account, such as whether we prefer the multi-gym with built-in or free weights. In the first case, changing the weights is easy and fast, while in the second case, we need more time to change them and space to put them down, but we can use smaller weights to have more levels of resistance.

Also, several multi-gym incorporate in addition to the classic chest, back, leg, arm training pulleys and various other constructions such as power towers (Racks) for the free training of the above muscle groups or the performance of multi-joint exercises but even additional free-track pulleys for execution of functional trainings. In these latter equipment, of course, we must expect correspondingly increased costs and space requirements.

What should I pay attention to before buying the multi-gym?

Once we have decided what we want to buy, it is good to consider the following individual elements before buying it:

  • Possibility of adjustments: for example the seat of the equipment important to be adjustable in height so that all heights find the correct training position. Likewise for the arm training pad (larry squat) if available, etc.
  • Total built-in pounds of resistance: should be at least 65-70 to serve the needs of a training program. Fewer kilos on the one hand do not meet the needs of a serious training, on the other hand it is an indicator of poor construction of the carrier equipment since usually multi-gym are manufactured according to the kilos they are required to manage. It goes without saying that the more available kilos the better!
  • Build quality: we look at the perceived build quality in terms of the thickness and shape of the metals, their paint, the quality of the pulleys and the upholstery.
  • Functionality: we make sure that there are adequate distances between the different exercise stations so that all movements can be performed comfortably and safely in their full range. For example, it is very important to stretch the arms in pull-ups for the back. We also pay attention to the correct and effortless movement of the wire ropes. When a cable “gets stuck” and doesn’t have the proper flow or rebound it wears out quickly and the exercise isn’t performed properly.
